5 Easy Steps to Writing a Great Blog Post

Denver digital marketingIt seems like almost everyone has a blog these days. My neighbor’s son blogs about his peewee football team. My niece blogs about her theater camp friends. My coworker blogs about his favorite baseball team, the Colorado Rockies. It seems everyone has something to say these days. But not everyone is writing with a specific purpose in mind like you, to generating new leads for your business. That’s why it is important for you to know a few easy steps that will help you with blog marketing to get the most results from your effort.

Know Your Audience

Even the best arguments are lost on deaf ears. In other words, you could write one hundred of the best blog articles ever, but unless they wind up in front of your targeted audience, they may offer you no value whatsoever.

You need to think long and hard about who you are trying to reach. Then figure out of best to communicate with them. What medium is best, a direct email or a relevant ads campaign?

What language should you use? Ideally, you want to speak to your audience the way they would speak to you. For instance, if you are writing a Colorado blog, you want to use cultural lingo and refer to local places and events.

Be the Informed Voice

When trying to generate leads for your company through blog posts, it’s important to represent yourself as an authority on your topic. You want to present your argument from a voice of confidence and reason.

Now, I am not saying you should make a bunch of wild claims and unfounded statements. In fact, it is quite the contrary. You should be learned and well-researched in all you are publishing. Just don’t forget to include that tone of self-assurance, as no one wants to listen to someone who doesn’t seem like they know what they are talking about.

Content is King

Remember, in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king. And in the land of self-promotion for your business, content is king. Blogging consistently is the goal. You want your readers to be able to correctly assume you have posted new material, ideally, multiple times per week. Great blog marketing means regular posting.

Too much work? Why blog at all, you ask? A whopping 71% of people say that company blogs affect their purchasing decisions! Even more amazing, businesses that blog five or more times per month tend to generate twenty times the amount of leads than businesses who blog four or less times per month. Twenty times more leads! That is a staggering figure, and it should make you realize that if you are already blogging, you might as well do it right and see the rewards!

The Blog is Your Museum, and You are its Curator

It is easy to get caught up in following a certain format or template, but you should feel free to take some artistic chances along the way. After all, while this blog may only be one small drop in a vast sea of information, it is your small piece. It belongs to you, and you should feel free to make it your own. Don’t feel you can only post your own links. Feel free to link to other interesting and entertaining material. Post a cool photo or review someone else’s work. There are unlimited ways for you to make your blog exciting and unique.

Share Your Ideas

Let’s review: you have identified your target audience, you have spoken knowledgeably about a variety of your issues, posted interesting and related material, and you have done so regularly. Now you need to ask yourself this question, “If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around, will anyone give a hoot about your family’s hardware stores DIY Blog.” You need to get the word out any and everywhere.

Research other blogs similar to your own and try to connect. Interact on their posts. Comment thoughtfully when you can. Create and maintain your online presence through social media. Always put up links to your blog posts. Consider website banners and other advertising to spread the word about your blog. Add the name and link on your email signature. And consider a contest or some other even to initially spread the word.

Like I said, it may seem daunting at first, but when you tackle it step by step, anything is possible. All your hard work will finally pay off and start generating quality leads in no time.  If you'd like to take our Denver blogging efforts to school, please subscribe at the top of this page.
